Drinking Aloe Vera – My Personal Experience
“
This story is a very personal one, which I experienced within a few months of being introduced to the idea of drinking Aloe Vera. It was this experience which cemented my belief of why Aloe is so good for you both externally and internally.
I often used to get heartburn after a meal. Also called “acid reflux”, it’s what happens when the natural acid in the stomach comes back up through the oesophagus (the tube which carries food from your mouth to your stomach).
Stomach acid is important because that is what is used to break down food before it gets passed into the digestive tract. Our stomachs have an acid-proof lining, but our oesophagus does not - which is why it’s called heartburn, because the acid burns and inflames the inside of the tube.
My heartburn got worse and worse and I was prescribed a drug called omeprazole which cuts down on the production of stomach acid. I was also advised never to eat late at night and to avoid alcohol and rich foods like chocolate. (No chocolate mousse for pudding. No tiramisu 😳)
Even with omeprazole, if I wasn’t careful, I would still get episodes of acid reflux, which would wake me up in the night coughing and spluttering.
I had probably been drinking Aloe for about 6 months (and I was still taking omeprazole), when I suddenly realised that I wasn’t getting any nighttime episodes of heartburn. I had one of those lightbulb moments: “Could it possibly be that Aloe was making a difference?” After all, Aloe is known to be an anti-inflammatory - good externally for cuts and burns, so did this mean internally as well?
So I decided to find out. Very gradually I cut back on my dosage of omeprazole. No heartburn. I kept cutting back. No heartburn. Finally after stopping the drug completely, I went to my GP and told him of my experience. He was very impressed and told me that if I didn’t need the drug - to stop taking it! I have not taken that drug for more than 20 years.
If I ever find myself in a situation where I do eat later in the evening - and maybe even have a tiramisu or a glass of wine, then I simply take about 60ml of plain Aloe last thing before I head to bed. I drink it very slowly and let it trickle down my throat. And guess what? I have never had a bout of acid reflux that woke me up in the middle of the night. Never!
Now please, if you are on omeprazole, do not do what I did and self-medicate. Always go to your GP first. But this was my personal experience and I am so delighted not to be on a prescription drug, because there are always side effects to taking drugs and if you can avoid them, so much the better.
These days, many of us are looking for plant-based alternatives in what we eat and drink, and our 99.7% pure Aloe gel certainly offers an excellent and beneficial plant-based alternative, and in my case an impressive result.
